guide to set up Sabnzbd
« on: August 18, 2006, 03:58:29 PM »

im trying to find a good guide that explains how to get Sabnzbd up and running on a windows xp system.  I have ninan running right now, but i have been having some issues with it, so i would like to try out Sabnzbd.  Does it work well with firefox?

it's pretty simple, just extract it, double click the sabnzb.exe file, then go to http://127.0.0.1:8080/sabnzbd on internet explorer. Then, go to config and enter your server details. From then on, save your .nzb files in the NZB_Blackhole folder and SABNZB will take care of the rest. If you are unsure of any settings just reply here and someone will be sure to help you (well I will anyways). And yes, you can use it in firefox too if you like.

Yep, like brucedlx said it's pretty simple really and works well with firefox.  If you can set up any other newsreader you can set up sabnzbd.  You might want to have the main executable load up with windows (it's pretty light on resources when idle), then go to the link that brucedlx gave above when you want to add a download or check on progress.  You don't have to keep FF or IE running when it's downloading.

The blackhole folder mentioned above helps wth automation, but personally I prefer to add either a nzb manually or input the Newzbin PostID, but to each their own. :)

By default, webaccess is only allowed from localhost. If you want to be able to access it from outside, you have to change the listen ip to the external ip of your network card.

And dont forget to set username and password, in order to keep a decent security level

I downloaded sabnzbd from http://www.usenetforyou.com/img/sabnzbd.exe.  I then ran it and extracted to a dir on my hdd.  Now, when I open SABnzbd.exe in the extracted dir and open http://127.0.0.1:8080/sabnzbd/ in a browser I get a 404.  So I opened taskmgr and didn't see the process listed, so I  opened SABnzbd.exe again and saw it listed for about 1 sec before it closed itself.

What else needs to be done, besides running the exe, to get this app going?  Are there any dependencies that need to be installed on my comp before running SABnzbd.exe?

Firefox & IE....but as soon as I open SABnzbd.exe it closes..so the process isn't open & listening on port 8080.

I'm not sure what exactly that distro is. Download the w32.exe version from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/sabnzbd/

It will be a self extracting zip file. Let it extract it's files/folders and run SABnzbd there.

You can try running SAB from the command line, or looking at the SABnzbd.log file to see if an error is given before the crash.

SAB is very touchy about missing folders. If your download/complete/blackhole/backup/log/cache/template or any other folder listed in the SABnzbd.ini file is missing, moved or renamed than SAB will crash almost immediately.

thx for pointing out the log dir...I noticed that it was failing @ port 8080, so I changed it to 8081 and it works now.

Thx for your help  :)

Sorry to resurrect this post from the grave...

Does anyone have any advice for sabnzbd power usage. I mean right now i'm using it and its great, but I get the feeling that it has the potential for so much more. Is there a way to intergrate it with newzbin so its point and click, not point, save and click? Yeah I know thats really lazy on my part but I'm just wondering. Any advice would be appreciated. I tried looking for a faq, or comprehensive readme, but they all just seem to explain basic functionality, which isn't much fun.

I'm having problems with Sabnzbd.

When I save a NZB, Sabnzbd detects it but on the Queue it always loads the NZB twice and the first one says ERROR, the download wont start until I delete the first ERROR'ed nzb and it will then move on to the second one and start downloading. This is a nuisance and I would like to figure out why its doing this.

Hopefully I am clear enough and somebody can help me.

I actually get the error all the time, but if I wait a few moments (although it depends on the size of what you are downloading I think), it fixes itself.  Give it up to a minute next time, see if that helps at all.  However, I don't get two entries for each NZB, so it might not be the same problem.

Do the logs tell you anything at all?
